- Bio: Dr. Kaufman received a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience and an MD in medicine from the Boston University Combined MD/PhD Program. As a doctoral student, she trained with Dr. Terence Keane at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Boston. Her research focused on the assessment and treatment of trauma-spectrum disorders including acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the dissociative disorders. She also trained to design, administer and interpret specialized psychological tests. Her doctoral dissertation, characterizing neurophysiological correlates of dissociation in combat veterans with PTSD, was awarded a letter of distinction. Her work resulted in a number of original research and review articles, and she presented her findings as an invited speaker and as a poster presenter at numerous local and national professional societies.
Following completion of the MD/PhD Program, Dr. Kaufman completed her adult psychiatry residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital, where she served as both the Administrative Chief Resident and the Chief Resident of the Clinical Evaluations Center. During residency, she obtained additional training in trauma-spectrum disorders with Dr. James Chu. After residency, she continued at McLean Hospital as a research fellow, and later as an attending psychiatrist at the Dissociative Disorders and Trauma Program. Currently, she is the Medical Director at the Hill Center for Women at McLean Hospital, a residential and day treatment program specializing in the use of skills training for women with PTSD. She also teaches and supervises psychiatry residents from Harvard training programs, and serves as a Training Mentor on the McLean campus. She is an instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Kaufman has been honored to receive the Boston University School of Graduate Medical Sciences MD/PhD Fellowship, the American Heart Association Medical Student Research Fellowship, the Malamud Prize in Psychiatry, the Ruth Hunter Johnson Prize in Psychiatry, the Robert G. Feldman Prize in Neurology, the Association of Women Psychiatrists Symonds Fellowship, the Adam Corneel Research Fellowship, and the Edward Messner Resident Teaching Award.
