- Bio: R. Kathryn McHugh, Ph.D. engages in a program of clinical and translational research focusing on two complementary lines of investigation: (1) the etiology and treatment of anxiety and substance use disorders; and, (2) the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based treatments. Dr. McHugh is particularly interested in affective vulnerability factors that are common across psychological disorders, with a focus on those that are modifiable with treatment. Her work in this area has included studies of the role of distress intolerance across psychological disorders and behavioral health outcomes; information processing biases relative to fear and drug cues; and, strategies to enhance therapeutic learning. In addition, in her research Dr. McHugh examines the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments. In this work she has a particular focus on factors influencing the transportability of interventions to service provision settings and the process of successful adoption and utilization of these treatments. Within this area, she has conducted research on treatment cost-efficacy, factors related to literacy, the use of information technology to facilitate dissemination, and patient perceptions of and preferences for treatment.
Dr. McHugh is a recipient of awards from the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12) of APA, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse/College of Problems on Drug Dependence. The Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Boston University and the American Psychological Association have provided funding for her research. Dr. McHugh also specializes in assessment and cognitive-behavioral treatment of depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders.
