- Bio: Dr. Timothy G. Benson is a native of Jefferson City Missouri. While attending Hampton University on a full football scholarship he was the recipient of multiple national scholar-athlete awards and granted Hampton's highest honor--The President's Cup. He accepted a dean's scholarship to the University of Rochester School of Medicine where his interest in psychiatry flourished. He completed his training in adult psychiatry at Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital residency program. After serving as the chief resident of addictions in his last year of residency, he went on to complete a 3 year research fellowship in addictions at McLean Hospital under the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA)-Clinical Trials Network (CTN) research grant. Prior to becoming medical director at the McLean Center at Fernside Dr. Benson also served as an assistant psychiatrist at McLean Hospital's Naukeag residential addiction facility. As a graduate of The Center for Psychoanalytic Studies at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Benson uses his knowledge in psychodynamic therapy to enhance his treatment of those dually diagnosed. Outside the area of addiction, Dr. Benson has spoken nationally on issues of mental health disparities and the fostering of psychological resilience in elite athletes.
