HISTORY
McLean Hospital: A Brief History from Charlestown to Belmont, Mass.

The old McLean Asylum as it appeared in the mid-1800s. The hospital was built in an area of Charlestown, Massachusetts,
that is now part of Somerville. Note the oncoming train at the left side of the image. The expanding rail service brought
about the end of the canal and river trade, and also helped prompt McLean to relocate to more a peaceful location. Detail
from the Seth Thomas Wall Clock, circa 1845.
