Title: "HOW BENEFICIAL ARE THE COGNITIVE ENHANCERS IN TREATING ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE?"

Course Description:

The medications indicated for treating Alzheimer's Disease will be identified and their indications and side effect profiles will be compared & contrasted. The course will provide information about the domains of cognitive enhancers' efficacy in treating Alzheimer's Disease, which include non-cognitive symptoms.

Course Objective:

The objective of this series is to explore a variety of areas in geriatric psychiatry; including diagnosis, psychopharmacology, psychotherapeutic treatments and general health and well-being.

Accreditation

Each individual session is accredited as follows:

Physicians:
McLean Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. McLean Hospital designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Psychologists:
McLean Hospital is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. McLean Hospital maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Participants meeting requirements will receive 1.5 CE credits.

Nurses:
This program carries 1.8 contact hours. McLean Hospital is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Rhode Island state nurses association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses' Credentialing center's commission on accreditation.

Social Workers:
This program has been approved for 1.5 Continuing Education hour for relicensure, in accordance with 258 CMR. Collaborative of NASW and the Boston College and Simmons College School of Social Work Authorization Number D 38795

Nursing Home Administrators:
McLean Hospital's Deemed Status Number is NH-3-2008. Each session meets the requirements for 1.5 continuing education credits.

Licensed Mental Health Counselors:
McLean Hospital is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP™) and may offer NBCC approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. Each session in this series is accredited for 1.5 clock hours of CE credit or .15 CEUs.

At the end of this lecture, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the 5 medications FDA indicated for treating Alzheimer's Disease and contrast their overlapping but different indications and side effect profiles.
  2. Describe the difference between "statistical significance" and "effect size" in assessing the clinical value of cognitive enhancers.
  3. List the domains of cognitive enhancers' efficacy in treating Alzheimer's Disease, which include non-cognitive symptoms.
