Belmont, MA - McLean Hospital President and Psychiatrist in Chief Scott Rauch, MD, has announced the appointment of Shelly F. Greenfield, MD, MPH, to the newly created position of chief academic officer (CAO) for the hospital. Greenfield is associate clinical director of McLean's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Program and serves as director of the Partners HealthCare Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program.

"Dr. Greenfield will play the principal leadership role with regard to McLean's academic mission," said Rauch. "She will provide vision and oversight for growing educational programs at all levels of the institution."

Greenfield, who completed her psychiatry residency training at McLean, has established herself as a national and international figure in the field of addiction psychiatry, with particular emphasis on clinical and public-health interventions. Her extensive federally funded research program has examined critical gender differences in substance-use disorders as well as effective substance abuse treatment services for vulnerable populations. Greenfield will continue conducting research in these areas and maintain a key role in the substance abuse treatment program.

"Dr. Greenfield's significant contributions as a leader in the academic community, as a skilled teacher and clinician, and as an established researcher, led me to choose her for this important new role," said Rauch. "As a trusted colleague and member of the President's Cabinet, I look forward to her continued contributions as CAO. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Greenfield on this key appointment."

"I am honored to serve in this new position and new role," said Greenfield. "Having spent the majority of my professional career at McLean, I have always valued its deep commitment to its academic mission. I am excited about the opportunity to sustain and advance these critical values as the hospital moves forward."

Greenfield has served as chair of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA's) Council on Addiction Psychiatry, is on the board of directors of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Commission on Substance Abuse Treatment Services at Columbia University's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. She also serves on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's examination committee for addiction psychiatry.

In the academic community, where she is a highly respected leader, Dr. Greenfield is editor-in-chief of the Harvard Review of Psychiatry and a member of the editorial board of the Harvard Mental Health Letter. She currently serves on the Harvard Medical School Dean's Faculty Council.

McLean Hospital is the largest psychiatric clinical care, teaching and research facility of Harvard Medical School, an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of Partners HealthCare.
