FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 08, 2009
Belmont, MA - McLean Hospital President and Psychiatrist in Chief Scott Rauch, MD, has teamed up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Massachusetts, to serve as the Chair and sponsor for this year's NAMI Walk. First Lady of Massachusetts Diane Patrick will participate as honorary chair for the annual event. The walk will be on Sunday, May 31 at 11 am at Artesani Park in Brighton.
Rauch, an avid NAMI supporter, was thrilled when he was asked to take an active role in planning this year's walk. For the past year, he has worked closely with NAMI Walk organizers to provide input and guidance about how to achieve their goals.
"Working with NAMI and its dedicated staff and volunteers has been a wonderful and fulfilling experience," said Rauch. "The walk is an excellent opportunity for mental health professionals, consumers and advocates to come together for a common cause in a healthy, relaxing and fun way."
On the morning of the walk, Rauch, along with Department of Mental Health Commissioner Barbara Leadholm, former Massachusetts First Lady Kitty Dukakis and State Senator Steven Tolman, will kick off the festivities, welcoming walkers and encouraging them to continue their work of increasing mental health awareness and decreasing stigma.
Also showing great support is Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health (PPMH), which is the walk's lead sponsor. "This is a fantastic event that allows us to raise public awareness about mental illness, fight stigma and support one of our most vocal advocacy groups," said PPMH Corporate Director Kenneth Sklar, EdD. "Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health is honored to be this year's presenting sponsor."
NAMI expects more than 5,000 walkers to participate in this year's walk and hopes to raise $400,000.
