The Appleton Continuing Care Program provides private pay residential services for persons with bipolar and psychotic disorders as an adjunct to their ongoing active treatment and rehabilitation.

Appleton Continuing Care Program

The Appleton Program is a long-term residential treatment program on McLean grounds. The mission of the program is to provide unique, personalized comprehensive psychiatric and rehabilitative care to persons suffering from bipolar and psychotic disorders and other disabling mental illness. Each resident has an individualized treatment team, consisting of a psychiatrist, a case manager and a primary counselor. Residents are also referred for psychotherapy as needed. Care decisions are made by the resident and/or his or her family in consultation with the treatment team.

Appleton Program Overview (pdf)

For most residents, the stay at Appleton ranges from six to nine months or longer. The goal of treatment is for residents to gain more independence by learning to understand, accept and manage their illness so that they can move out into the community and live as independently as their condition allows.

Appleton House provides residents with a home-like setting in an historic building. There are semi-private and private bedrooms, a common living area with television and VCR, kitchen and dining room where staff and residents prepare and serve meals, a conference room and staff areas.

Residents undergo comprehensive psychiatric assessment upon admission to the program. With their case managers, residents plan individual and group treatment experiences utilizing the resources of McLean Hospital and the surrounding community. There are house meetings for goal setting, symptom management, medication education and transition. Family meetings, treatment reviews and necessary consultations for psychiatric, medical and neurological concerns are arranged through the program. Once residents accomplish the goals of their treatment, they may transition to community-based homes, to supported apartments or to independent living.

Staff

The Appleton Continuing Care Program is a part of the Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Program. The house programs and case management are provided and supervised by experienced professional staff and psychiatric consultation is provided as needed. The residences are staffed by experienced community residence counselors 24 hours a day, seven days a week and senior professional staff members are always on-call.
