The McLean SouthEast Adolescent Acute Residential Treatment (ART) Program, located on the grounds of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Brockton, Mass., is an intensive, short- term, highly focused treatment program for teenagers suffering from emotional and behavioral distress. The ART, a program of Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, serves up to 20 adolescents, ages 13 to 19, in a coeducational therapeutic environment. Residents typically come to the unit directly from the community to address emerging acute problems or from inpatient hospitals to receive additional treatment.
Treatment Approach
In-depth evaluation of each individual allows for the development of a personalized treatment plan. Treatment covers the full range of the psychiatric spectrum, including mood and thought disorders and their associated behaviors, family and school difficulties, and substance abuse. The residents of the ART may need intense verbal support during their stay, but are expected to be able to maintain self-control. They should not require physical management of the sort offered in inpatient settings. The ART staff specializes in making sophisticated assessments, diagnoses and recommendations in complex situations.
The treatment model emphasizes skills development and offers residents ample opportunity to make personal decisions on how they choose to behave. This allows them to learn most effectively and return safely to the community as quickly as possible. In this context, families are welcomed onto the unit at any time and are considered a critical part of the treatment team. As a resource and a partner with the community, the ART makes extensive effort to reach out to and involve community treaters, including therapists, agencies and schools.
