CLINICAL UNIT BASED RESEARCH
Psychopharmacology Research Laboratory
Dr. Andrew Stoll, MD |
Clinician-investigators in the Psychopharmacology Research Laboratory, directed by Andrew Stoll, M.D., are conducting research on naturally occurring compounds whose properties suggest that they may ameliorate the symptoms of bipolar disorder.
These include omega-3 fatty acids (a constituent of fish oil), taurine and SAMe. Preliminary findings include the discovery that omega-3 fatty acids, unlike most substances, cross the blood brain barrier into the human brain and cause a change in membrane physiology. These naturally occurring products represent entirely new ways to treat illness that may be safer, and more effective than current approaches.
