Fig 3: Automatic segmentation of digital images of Fos expression in rat brain for
the identification, counting and spatial pattern detection of Fos-positive
nuclei. Non-Fos candidate objects shown are readily excluded by our
mathematical morphology algorithm that employs darkness, size and shape
criteria automatically after training, together with statistical
optimization. As shown, the present method works well with various types of
background contrast and staining patterns.
