RESEARCH UPDATE 2004
Dear Friends, Donors and Colleagues:
We are pleased to present Research Update 2004-2005, a summary of extraordinary growth and success in McLean Hospital's research program. McLean is a world leader in research directed toward the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, alcoholism and drug abuse, Alzheimer's disease and other neuropsychiatric illnesses.

Among the many highlights this year was another significant rise in research funding, which continued to rank McLean among the top 15 hospitals worldwide receiving support from the National Institutes of Health. Based on total revenues, McLean's research program has more than doubled in size from just five years ago, a remarkable achievement. We now have more than 350 research scientists and staff working on finding the causes and cures for neuropsychiatric illnesses.
Recent additions to our facilities include a third $3-million magnetic resonance scanner in the Neuroimaging Center, as well as a $500,000 fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) in the Neuroregeneration laboratory. We have begun design of our new Clinicial Trial Center. These resources, along with creative studies, enable our clinician-researchers to advance the cause of finding better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent psychiatric disorders.
While we grow our research program through these and other initiatives, our leadership role in neuroscience research remains unchallenged. We continue to receive more research funding than any other private psychiatric hospital in the world. We continue to maintain the largest psychiatric neuroscience research program of any Harvard University affiliated hospital, school or department. The scientific publications emanating from McLean's research departments continue to be among the most frequently cited in the world.
